It was no more than two minutes before we were standing in front of a well-mannered desk clerk. The line to check in moved surprisingly quickly – perhaps because of the presence of an attendant monitoring the length of the queue. The bellman was, however, kind enough to take away all of our luggage so we weren’t encumbered while waiting in the hotel registration line. We deferred, because we still needed to pull some other clothing out of the travel bags, and didn’t need an audience watching us re-pack our skivvies. As we pulled into the hotel, we were met by a bellman, and given the option to have our golf travel bags taken directly to the golf course. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a zen-like golf experience that will help you find your inner Bobby Jones, this ain’t the place. If you want a Las Vegas experience and also enjoy golfing, the convenience of having a highly rated course right outside of a hotel located on the Strip, along with an out-of-this-world spa and a top-notch gym, make the Encore an extremely attractive option. While we try to steer clear of reviewing the actual golf courses themselves (there are plenty of other sources for opinions on that), we did note that while the course is visually interesting and features a multitude of trees, thick shrubbery (in which we were frequently digging for lost balls), rolling fairways and other natural touches, the fact that massive surrounding hotels are always in your sight lines means that you never really forget that you’re in the middle of Las Vegas. As would be expected in a resort of this size, the service doesn’t feel particularly personal, but the staff is professional and attentive.įor hardcore golfers, the resort suffers a bit in not having any golf “feel” to it – golf is obviously just one type of entertainment available in Las Vegas, and it isn’t featured in any way that you would notice. The rooms are spacious and modern (no Louis XIV chairs and floral doilies), the fitness center is spectacular, and the spa is in a class all by itself. There’s a discernable light floral scent, but it’s nowhere near as overpowering as the wafts of vanilla you’ll get at Aria just down the street. The décor emphasizes red (presumably playing upon its symbolization of prosperity in Asia), with a bug and butterfly motif. The lobby at Encore isn’t overly ostentatious – one might even consider it to be unassuming, particularly when compared to the Bellagio and the like. Note that if you want to step it up a notch, you can stay at the even more exclusive Encore Tower, which has a completely separate entrance, while the 4-star Wynn is a more economical alternative. The 5-star Encore glitters at the end of the modern Strip. If you're looking for a great time waster, or if you're training to be the next wizard, give Pinball HD a try. At $2.99, it's also one of the least expensive optimized games for Tegra 2 devices. Pinball HD is a fun game with great graphics and pretty addictive game play. When a game ends, you're given the option to input your name so that your score can be listed on your devices high score board as well as a leader board for other players who have the game installed. Much like a regular pinball game, I found myself greeted with the game over screen a lot faster than I expected, but this was due to my lack of skill more than any problems with the controls. I found it a lot easier to play this way, though others might enjoy the added detail that the camera view provides. One nice feature is that if you swipe with two fingers, the game will zoom out to show the entire board instead of following the ball with a camera. Response time was fast, and the sounds seemed in sync with what was happening on the screen. You tap the right side of the screen to move the right toggle, and do the opposite for the left. ![]() Each board has a special animation to fit the theme, but I like "Big Kong" the best.Īs far as actual gameplay goes, it performs how you would expect it to. My favorite board is the Jungle, because if you can aim the ball just right, the Gorilla will pick it up and pound his chest before throwing it back on the board. The colors are vibrant and there are a ton of little animations shown in that seem to exist just because they make the game nicer to look at. Pinball HD was published by NVIDIA to show off the graphics power of their Tegra 2 processor, and it shows. Sure, I have my tower defense games and angry birds, but I wanted to see what an "optimized" game would look like on my Tab's massive screen. One of the first apps I downloaded on my tablet was the TegraZone, a special app browser developed by NVIDIA to showcase applications that were optimized for its Tegra II chipset. If our radios were "hot" and transmitted anytime we spoke, there would be complete chaos. In busy airspace, the Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO) can be controlling multiple aircraft at a time. However, when talking to ATC, we are very rarely the only aircraft that they are talking to. To do this, we have a couple of options available to us, but the most used method is via voice over the radio. When we are several miles above the earth, staying in touch with ATC on the ground is extremely important to ensure that we stay safely separated from other aircraft. One of the 9 PTT switches in the 787 (Photo by Charlie Page/The Points Guy) To access the switch, we must take the conscious action of lifting the guard before activating the evacuation command. On hearing this horn, the crew are trained to open their door and start evacuating passengers down the escape slides.Īs the consequence of flipping this switch is potentially life-threatening if done at the wrong time, the switch is covered by a guard to stop it from being accidentally activated. This causes a loud horn to beep at each cabin crew seat. The point of no return is making the PA to evacuate and flicking the Evacuation Command switch. However, even with these actions complete, there is a chance for us to stop the checklist if the situation has changed. This is designed to put the aircraft into a condition where it is safe for the crew to open the doors, inflate the slides and for passengers to exit down onto the ground.įor the most part, this involves depressurizing the aircraft so that the doors can be opened and shutting the engines down so that there is no danger to people once they are on the ground. When the decision has been made to evacuate the aircraft, we methodically work our way through the Emergency Evacuation checklist. The evacuation command switch (Photo by Charlie Page/The Points Guy)Īnother switch that we hope never to have to use, the Evac Command switch is used only in the event of the Captain ordering an emergency evacuation. This is to ensure that cabin crew or any infants on laps have access to a mask. Depending on the aircraft type, most rows will have more masks than seats. When we do this, the masks in the cabin drop out and must be worn immediately. To protect the passengers from this occurring, pressing the passenger oxygen switch is part of our drill when dealing with a loss of cabin pressurization. However, the threat of being affected by a lack of oxygen is still very real. In fact, most are slow events that are noticed by the pilots before anyone else does. That said, not all decompressions happen this dramatically. Should the cabin pressurization fail, the inside becomes the outside in an instant.Īs regular flyers will know, in these situations, masks will automatically drop from the panel above your head. The temperature can be as cold as minus 94☏ and the oxygen levels so low that without assistance, you would become unconscious in a matter of seconds. ![]() Just on the other side of that window, the atmospheric conditions are so harsh that they are unable to support human life. They become overwhelmed with the situation and are unable to see it in its most simple form.īy pressing the autopilot disconnect button located on the control column, the pilot takes back responsibility for keeping the wings level from the aircraft. All too often, accidents have occurred because the pilots didn't understand what the automatics were doing and didn't take the correct action. However, with added complexity can come added confusion. Modern airliners are complicated machines with scores of computer systems designed to make the pilot's life easier. A pilot should always be in control of their aircraft, whether it's a two-seater Cessna or a 550 seat A380. When we fasten our safety harnesses when we take our seats, we are not strapping ourselves into the aircraft, we are strapping the aircraft to us. ![]() However, what this button represents is control. Used normally just once during a flight, it's used far less regularly than the altitude selector and has much less of an effect on the aircraft as the engine fire handle. You may be surprised to find this button at number one. ![]() ![]() The autopilot disconnect button on the left (Photo by Charlie Page/The Points Guy) So while I've come to terms with having to do all of this, what I hate about BC is that it's completely worthless to actually create a route from scratch without any saved or imported waypoints. Once in the nav, the system will follow the route, but there are times during the ride that it will try to reroute, and that's something I keep my eye on. When everything is good to go, it's time to export to the Garmin. Where the two diverge, I drag those parts of the route to match the track and those create shaping points. To help quickly find the differences between the two, I usually make the track magenta and the route cyan or light green. However, BC is like Google and it will make the route look how it wants. But that track is useless when made into a route, so I have to use the route creation tool to add the waypoints in the order I want and BC will then make a route. Is there a replacement in the works or a. I haven't been on a Garmin forum in years, but coming back I note that Basecamp is being abandoned by Garmin as far as any updates are concerned. I have found it very convenient to use my computer for plotting routes, finding addresses, and other mapping tasks. When I import the finished KML to BaseCamp, it shows as a track and it will be true to what I wanted. What, if anything, will replace Basecamp. Sometimes that's OK but more often than not, it isn't and I have to drag the route to where I want it to be. I use them when the track and the route don't match.įor example, in Google Maps/My Maps, when I draw my route, Google will always take the shortest route. The waypoint has now gone to the exact location that you saw it in Google maps. Highlight them numbers and paste the small numbers that you copied, then close the box. Once you have copied these numbers, move over to Basecamp then right click ( it doesn't matter where on the map that you do this ) a new waypoint sign comes up, then you click on the waypoint, that will more likely be in your list, and the familiar box pops up with lots of numbers. You need to highlight and copy the lesser amount of numbers. ![]() Lots of numbers pop up, then push enter, and another box pops up with more numbers. ![]() ![]() Now go to the search bar on Google maps and right click and paste in the box the numbers you copied. Now move the cursor to the digits and the left click the mouse, you'll see at the bottom of the the maps " Copied to clipboard ". A box pops up and you'll see multiple digits. If you want to find a place in Basecamp, it's not the easiest thing to do, however the other week I stumbled across a tutorial about Basecamp, and in this tutorial there's a dead easy way to find a place, using Google maps.Īll you do to locate the place that you're having trouble finding in Basecamp is to go to Google maps, zoom in to the place you want to go to, or waypoint, and then right click the mouse. The problem is that a Garmin uses Windows developers and started from a Windows product (Mapsource) which was heavily optimized for Windows video updates. ![]() I don't know if this will be of any use to users of Garmin's Basecamp, I have certainly found it very useful, knowing how crap the search engine is, and the not too easy to use Basecamp, in general. True that I heard the same about the Windows version, but I don't want to buy and run Windows on my Mac, solely for BaseCamp. The rain and lighting effects set the tone for the world, one that leaves you feeling vulnerable. I particularly enjoyed a platforming section that had me evading a monster by climbing across sprawling bookshelves in a library that, from my tiny perspective, seemed impossibly big. The settings that you jump and climb through have a moody sense of crumbling realism. Stellar art direction helps sell the creepy, toylike world of Little Nightmares II. The overall effect is such that you simultaneously feel like a kid-maybe a sadistic one like Sid from Toy Story, but a kid nonetheless-playing with toys in their toybox and like the toys themselves. Walk close enough to the camera and your character will hit an invisible fourth wall. If you move the camera far enough to the left or right, up or down, you can see the black space where the room ends. Since the release of the first entry in 2017, the Little Nightmares series has combined the dark and the playful, casting players as little kids in a world of big and powerful monsters. But, regardless of your past experience with the series, there is a catharsis inherent in these rare moments when our fragile characters finally get a chance to fight back. These moments are especially effective if you've played the previous game. There are other moments like this, where Tarsier takes what you thought you knew and suddenly upends it, leaving you shocked and sputtering. For example, with there being no weapons in the first game, I was shocked when, during the first chapter, the solution for dealing with a vicious pursuer was to pick up a shotgun with my AI companion, Six, and shoot our stalker dead. Many of Little Nightmares II's best moments are structured like jokes: tense build-up released by a climactic surprise. As the player, you may want to play in this world, but Mono's clear motivation is to find a painless route to safety. Tarsier's imaginatively brooding art helps to sell this story. Though Little Nightmares 2 tells its story wordlessly, we can easily intuit Mono's goal: escape. His horrifying adventure takes him out of the woods and through a frightening cityscape haunted by humans who have turned into frightening parodies of mundane occupations, like a teacher whose watchful eyes dart at the end of a long, distended neck. From the moment we first meet Mono, alone in the woods, he is vulnerable. Lasting relief, however, is nowhere to be found on Mono's journey. I climbed onto the light, and used the impromptu step stool to hop the barrier, marveling at the way developer Tarsier Studios had cleverly used a colorful environmental detail as a hint for a puzzle-a joke where a sigh of relief greeted the punchline instead of laughter. Sure enough, the light fixture whooshed over my head, hit the barrier, and came to a halt. When I respawned, I set the pressure plate off again and crouched down. "I wonder if I can." I thought, eyeing the nearby toy, ".duck." ![]() Once the checkpoint reset, I tried again, attempting to quickly run away from the floorboard before the pendulum fell. I turned to run just as a metal light fixture swung down from the ceiling, smashing me into the barrier and killing me. When I approached, the floorboard the duck was sitting on sunk into the floor. Behind it, there was an oaky barrier, formed from leaning one table against another-too tall for my character, a tiny child named Mono, to climb. A dim spotlight from somewhere above shone on its reflective wings. It was the kind of carved, wooden plaything that kids drag around on a piece of twine, with wheels where the real waterfowl's webbed feet would be. About an hour into Little Nightmares II, I found a toy duck resting on a hardwood floor. Online applications for non-students at this site are accepted during the months of April, July, and December.
